Names are important. Our name is something that distinguishes us among the mass of humanity. In the scriptures, name meanings carry significant weight. Abraham means “father of many.” Daniel means “God is my judge.” Elijah means “my God is Yahweh.”
The name Jesus comes from a Greek translation of the Aramaic Yeshu’a. In Hebrew it’s Yehoshu’a which translates into “Yahweh (God) is salvation. Matthew 1: 21-23 tells us the meaning of Jesus’ name, and reminds us that it is God, through an angel, who named the Messiah. The J factor: Jesus literally has the name of God in his own name. And that name is the destiny that he came to fulfill, first in his own life, and thereafter through his followers.
As Christians, we bear Christ in our name. The J factor: It’s a part of who we are. That’s why we want to be the very revealing of grace and truth as he was. Jesus people. Christ-ians. The name suits us.

More than anything, baptism marks our birth as Christians. It involves a process that is every bit as wet and messy as physical birth, but it is also every bit as permanent. When we are baptized, we are marked, chosen, by God. The chosen one, is not just Jesus ... it is each one of us. We are precious, beloved, safe in an everlasting embrace of God. |
